Laser Techniques for Plastics
Mark, cut, drill, and weld plastics using laser technology
Plastic Laser Marking
There are several types of laser marking methods that can be used on plastic. Some of the most common methods include:
- Carbonization marking: This method uses a high-power focused laser beam to create a chemical change on the surface of the plastic, resulting in a dark high-contrast mark.
- Foaming marking: This method creates a raised mark on the plastic surface by generating gas bubbles within the plastic material.
- Color change marking: This method uses a low-power laser to change the color of the plastic surface, resulting in a contrasting mark.
- Engraving: This method removes material from the surface of the plastic to create a deep, permanent mark.
- Annealing: This method heats the plastic surface to a temperature just below its melting point, causing a color change that creates a permanent mark.
The choice of the laser marking method depends on various factors, including the plastic type and color, the desired mark quality and durability, and the production requirements.
Plastic Laser Cutting
When it comes to cutting plastics, laser cutting offers the advantage of not applying direct mechanical stress on the parts. This non-contact method eliminates the need to replace blades, which is often required by other cutting methods. Our laser cutting systems are capable of cutting intricate patterns into parts, as well as cutting long lines through plastic sheets, providing versatile cutting capabilities for all your plastic cutting needs.
Plastic Degating
Degating, a form of laser cutting, is a process that involves separating individual molded plastic parts from the runner at the gate. Due to the sensitivity of the process to stress, it requires precise cut locations. Laser systems provide non-contact degating, minimizing the strain on parts and producing edges that require no additional post-processing. This method ensures the production of high-quality parts while also offering the convenience of precise cuts.
Plastic Laser Welding
Laser welding is a highly effective method of sealing plastics with similar melting properties. It utilizes a concentrated beam of light to melt the plastic, creating a strong bond between the two pieces. Unlike traditional welding methods, laser welding can even join clear-on-clear plastics without requiring any additives or causing color changes. This makes it an ideal choice for applications that demand clear or transparent components. Additionally, laser welding provides a clean and precise weld that requires minimal post-processing, making it a popular choice for industrial and medical applications.
Some common examples of laser welding plastics include:
- Automotive laser welding of plastic headlights and other components requiring a clean finish such as headlights and dashboard display housings.
- Laser welding plastic medical devices such as balloon and IV catheters, syringes, blood and dialysis filters, and surgical instruments.
Plastic Laser Drilling
Laser drilling is a highly accurate and precise method for creating holes in plastic parts. This process utilizes the localized energy of the laser to provide fine-tuned control over the shape and placement of the holes. As a result, laser systems offer an efficient and effective method for drilling plastics, allowing for the creation of high-quality and precise holes that meet the specific requirements of your project. With laser drilling, you can achieve consistent results across a range of plastic materials, making it a versatile and reliable option for your drilling needs.
